Known as the "Winged Warriors" of New Zealand Speedway, Modifieds are instantly recognisable by the oversized aerofoils mounted above the roof. They're among the fastest dirt track machines in the country, and watching them change direction so sharply at speed is genuinely something to see.
You hear them before anything else, too — the rumble rolls right through the facility and you feel it as much as you hear it.
Winning in a Modified means throwing the car sideways into the corner and trusting the downforce from that wing, backed up by strong acceleration and split-second timing. Get the judgement right and it looks effortless; get it wrong and the corner will let you know about it.
