The Wellington Stockcar Society was formed in 1964, a decade on from the arrival of stock car racing in New Zealand. In those early years drivers had to travel to tracks like Palmerston North and Stratford to compete, and it wasn't until 1968 that a home track was completed at Te Marua, Upper Hutt. Built to a typical oval length of 385 metres, Te Marua broke from the cinder tracks of the era with a clay surface — and it remains a nationally significant venue for stock car racing, and a genuine drivers' track.
Today the Wellington Speedway Society is an incorporated society, run by an elected volunteer committee that promotes and runs speedway events. The club goes from strength to strength, hosting a range of Wellington events and National titles each season alongside full fields of cars and a spectator experience unlike anything else in the capital.
